Credit Cards for Indians on US Visas

Credit on H1B is a different game than credit in India. No CIBIL score transfers; you start at zero. But within 12–18 months of arrival, with the right card stack, you can hit 750+, qualify for the best premium cards, and use rewards to fund flights home. The constraint is not creditworthiness — it's documentation friction in months 1–6.

Five rules H1B cardholders should follow

  1. Pay statement balance in full every month. US credit card APRs (often 22–29%) destroy any rewards you earn. The CFPB 2023 report shows average APR at all-time highs.
  2. Keep utilization under 10%. Utilization is the largest week-to-week mover of FICO score. If your $5K limit shows $4K balance, score drops 30–50 points temporarily.
  3. Don't close your oldest card. Average age of accounts is 15% of FICO. Downgrade to no-fee version instead.
  4. Apply spaced out. 5+ inquiries in 12 months = automatic decline at most prime issuers.
  5. Use the welcome bonuses you qualify for. $750–$1,000 in points per card on H1B income is achievable. Don't burn the eligibility window.

Your US credit history persists across H1B → Green Card → citizenship transitions; same SSN, same FICO. New status does not reset anything. But your card mix should evolve: as Green Card holder you can get business credit cards (often easier approval), as a citizen you unlock products like the Costco Anywhere Visa (technically a citizenship-checked product at some banks). If you leave the US, accounts can stay open if you have a forwarding US address; without one, most issuers eventually close. Pay-off all balances, keep at least one card open with auto-pay set up against a US bank account. Closing all US cards on exit means starting from zero if you ever return.

Sign-up bonus efficiency for Indians on H1B

Indian flag carriers (Air India, IndiGo) accept Chase Ultimate Rewards and Amex Membership Rewards transfers via Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer (1:1 from Chase, 1:1 from Amex), and Air France Flying Blue (1:1 from both). 60,000 Chase UR transferred to KrisFlyer covers a one-way US-to-India business class ticket. The math is meaningful: $4,000 of grocery + travel spend on an Amex Gold or Sapphire Preferred at average 2–3x earn, plus 60K welcome bonus, equals one round-trip business-class flight home in year one.

How FICO actually works for new immigrants

Your FICO score is built from five inputs. Knowing the weights helps you build a 750+ score in 12–18 months instead of the 5+ years most people take.

FactorWeightWhat new immigrants should do
Payment history35%Auto-pay statement balance from day one. One late payment drops score 80–110 points.
Amounts owed (utilization)30%Pay down before statement closes, not just before due date. Target under 10% reported utilization.
Length of credit history15%Don't close oldest cards. Average age matters more than card count.
Credit mix10%A car loan or installment helps; not worth taking one just for the score.
New credit (inquiries)10%Space hard inquiries 6+ months apart. Pre-qualification (soft pull) is free.

Authorized-user trick that actually works

If your spouse or relative is a US citizen with a long-history card, ask them to add you as an authorized user on a card with at least 5 years of history and never-late payments. Their account history posts to your credit report within 30–60 days. This is the single fastest legal way to take a 0-score new arrival to 700+ in 90 days. Two cautions: (1) the primary cardholder is liable for all charges, so this works best within family; (2) some issuers (notably Capital One) report authorized-user data inconsistently — Chase and Amex are reliable.

What every H1B should know about hard inquiries

A hard inquiry stays on your report for 24 months and counts in FICO scoring for 12 months. Each one drops your score 3–8 points. Multiple inquiries within 14–45 days for the same product type (mortgage, auto, student loan) are bundled as one — but credit card inquiries are not bundled. If you apply for 4 cards in a week to chase sign-up bonuses, expect a 20–30 point temporary drop and possible auto-decline at most prime issuers under "5/24" type rules. Source: CFPB.
