Federal income tax — 2025 IRS brackets

For a 1040 filer (US tax resident), the calculator subtracts the standard deduction ($14,600 single, $29,200 MFJ for 2025), 401(k) and HSA pre-tax contributions, then applies the bracketed marginal rates. Source: IRS — Standard Deduction.

FICA — when you pay, when you don't

FICA = 6.2% Social Security (on wages up to the $168,600 wage base in 2025) + 1.45% Medicare on all wages + 0.9% Additional Medicare on wages over $200,000 (single). FICA applies to gross wages — pre-tax 401(k) and HSA do not reduce FICA.

F1 and J1 students/scholars are exempt from FICA during their non-resident years under IRC §3121(b)(19) — the calculator zeroes FICA when you select F1 or J1.

State tax

The calculator applies an estimated effective state tax rate. Real state tax has its own brackets, deductions, and credits. Nine states have no income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming. California, New York, New Jersey, Oregon, and Hawaii have top marginal brackets above 9%.

1040 vs 1040-NR

If you file 1040-NR as a non-resident, the standard deduction is generally not allowed — exception: Indian students/trainees on F1, J1, or Q visas can claim the standard deduction under US-India Tax Treaty Article 21(2). Select "Form 1040-NR + India treaty" if you qualify. Most H1B holders file 1040 once they pass the Substantial Presence Test (typically year 2 onward).
