Your credit file doesn't exist. A new file is created when a lender reports your account to Equifax, TransUnion, or Experian. Most secured cards report within 30-60 days of account opening.

What drives each stage
Months 0-3: The invisible stage
Your credit file doesn't exist. A new file is created when a lender reports your account to Equifax, TransUnion, or Experian. Most secured cards report within 30-60 days of account opening.
Months 3-6: The biggest jump window
The authorized user hack works here. If a US resident adds you as an authorized user on their 5+ year old card, that card's entire history — age, payment history, utilization — flows to your credit file. This single move can add 60-85 points.
Months 6-12: First real card
At 680+ score, you qualify for most basic cards — Chase Freedom Unlimited, Capital One Savor One, Discover It Cash Back. The approval adds another account, increasing available credit and lowering utilization.
Months 12-24: Optimization
Score gains slow. Focus shifts to: keeping utilization under 10%, never missing a payment, avoiding new hard inquiries unless necessary.

| Goal | Score needed |
|---|---|
| First unsecured credit card | 650+ |
| H1B mortgage | 620+ (FHA) / 680+ (conventional) |
| Chase Sapphire Preferred | 700+ |
| Best mortgage rate | 740+ |
| AmEx Platinum | 750+ |
Can you speed it up?
Yes, but with limits:
- Authorized user hack: Instant +60-85 points (fastest single move)
- Experian Boost: Adds rent/utilities, +5-20 points (works with some H1B profiles)
- Becoming joint account holder: Better than authorized user — you appear as primary borrower
- Rapid rescore: Lenders can pay for urgent bureau updates (useful right before mortgage)
What NOT to do
- Open 5+ cards in your first year (tanks average age, triggers 5/24 rule)
- Close your oldest card ever
- Carry a balance month-to-month (interest costs money, doesn't help score)
- Apply for cards you don't need just to "boost score"
